Pre-Surgical Preparations Before Sinus Lift Procedure
1 to 2 weeks before your surgery
Some medications and supplements affect bleeding and your body’s healing abilities. So our dentist will ask about the medications and supplements you’re currently taking. We’ll coordinate with your physician to recommend which medications need to be paused temporarily.
If you’re a smoker, you’ll have to stop smoking weeks before your surgery; otherwise, it will delay healing.
24 hours before your surgery
You should stock up on soft food items in your pantry. Opt for foods like yogurt, scrambled eggs, pudding, oatmeal, mashed potatoes, etc. These are easy to eat and won’t hurt your mouth while it’s healing.
Our Taylor dentist may advise you to stop eating and drinking a few hours before your procedure, especially if you’re receiving IV sedation.
Also, it’s better to arrange for someone to drive you back home after surgery.
On the morning of your appointment
Wear comfortable clothes and make sure you only take the medications approved by your physician and our dental team. Try arriving 15 to 20 minutes early at our office to get any remaining paperwork done.
What Happens During a Sinus Lift Procedure?
A sinus lift is a minor surgery. Our dentist first numbs the treatment area using a local anesthetic. In some situations, especially for patients with dental anxiety, we may use oral or IV sedation.
We make a cut in your gums and open a small window in your jawbone. This gives us access to your sinus membrane. Our dentist then lifts the membrane very carefully and places a bone graft beneath your sinus floor.
The final step is suturing the cut on your gums. The bone graft heals within a few months, creating a very sturdy base for your implants.
How Long Does Recovery Take After a Sinus Lift?
The initial healing usually completes within 1 to 2 weeks after a sinus lift. Care during this time is just as important as the time before your surgery.
We suggest avoiding using a straw, blowing your nose, sneezing with your mouth closed, and all other similar activities that increase oral or nasal pressure. Usually, most patients are able to get back to their routine after one to two days.
Overall, it can take about 4 to 6 months or sometimes longer for the jawbone to fully heal.
